A neighbor of ours, an older woman with a spritely black dog, stopped by our house last night. Knocked. When was the last time someone unexpectedly knocked on our door? Ever? She had brought with her a bright red bag. Inside of this bag, beneath layers of oh-so-fun paper, was a stuffed wolf pup. Every year that she loses a friend, she explained, she adds a new little one to her Christmas list. We have no tree, no flashy lights nor tasty tinsel, but it sure feels cozy and Christmassy over here. :)

Occupy Living Room Couch

Learning from the amateur mistakes of occupy-protestor-predecessors, this young protestor made sure to clearly and loudly delineate his demands: warm milk. a chest rub (with lots of swirls, hearts, stars). an original song (about him) sung softly. a fancy-ass white noise machine to fill the air with sounds of the ocean, his ancestral home. And most importantly, the ultimate goal of his protest, a long-ass nap on the living room couch. Amen brother. Yell and you shall be heard.

Giant Flying Turd

AP Nov 13 2011. The 13th day of November proved unlucky for a quiet Colorado neighborhood. In the midst of another extreme windstorm typical of this area, residents woke up on a Sunday morning to find a GIANT FLYING TURD!!! The look of terror on the faces of these flamingos says it all.

Hard to comprehend...

To preface, and while it goes without saying - I'm by no means a world class endurance athlete. That being said, I've done a couple of marathons, a handful of triathlons and a dozen other races of varying distances. So tonight I went up to the local high school football field to do some "speed work"... just work on doing some sprints, get the heart rate up, work on the 'fast twitch' muscles if you will, etc., So for kicks, and using my GPS watch to measure my time, and the football lines to measure the distance - I took off on a flat-out-100-yard-sprint... goal to goal, with the wind at my back on a brand new AstroTurf field. I wanted to see how fast I could run it. I'm pushing.. and when I'm about half way my quads are aching, I'm even throwing in audible grunts every few strides as I am REALLY trying to let it rip for 100 yards straight, leave it all out there, etc. I even start to fade with about 20 yards to go but notice this an hit the pedal again, knowing I can rest once I cross the opposing goal line. Right as I cross the line, marking 100 yards - I stop my watch .. I proceed to put my hands on my head and walk around in a meandering circle as I struggle to even out my breath again. My lungs are burning, and with every heart beat it seems that my vision also blurs. When I look down at my watch, I ran a 100 yards at a "pace per mile" of 4:37 ... meaning if I could carry on that pace for 1 mile, I'd run the mile in 4:37. Not too bad. Then I read this....

"...Geoffrey Mutai won the 26.2 Mile NYC Marathon, finishing with a time of 2:05:06. It was something of a spectacle for the thousands of fans who lined the city's streets to witness what Mutai accomplished. He averaged a 4:47-per-mile pace over the course of 26.2 miles"

Fall Clashes With Summer

,

Fall wind clashes with summer breeze
Pink flamingos, lime chairs with golden trees
Red leaves crowd the flower bed
Pink summer rose is not yet dead
Shadows stretch long even at high noon
That frickin’ snow will be here soon…

Diva Bees off to their best start

The Diva Bees are now 3-0 after victories over the Pixies (13-4), a come from behind victory over the Tigers (8-5) and a near shutout over the Mermaids last night (4-1). I will say that last year (before I was the coach) they couldn't beat the Mermaids but this year they had their stingers out and made the Mermaids look like a fish out of water.

Buy, buy, says the sign in the shop window; Why, why, says the junk in the yard.

Put a bird cage near the window so that the bird can see the sky? It's much better to look than not to, even if it hurts.

Ballerina Squirrel

We have a red squirrel in our backyard who is quite animated in an overly hoppy, rabid sort of way. I have named her 'Ballerina Squirrel' after Lionel Richie's song 'Ballerina Girl' (1986, "Ballerina Squirrel, you are so lovely...."). Last week, as I was enjoying my first few days of summer vacation, I was watching my backyard critters, and Ballerina Squirrel provided a lovely show. She had a huge

stick in her mouth and was hopping around the yard, finally stopping long enough to turn the stick in her little paws and play it like a flute. At this moment, I felt inspired to leave the patio and dance with her. Just then I remembered the warning on the news about an outbreak of rabies - and to avoid animals that are acting strange. Alas, this is the curse of all artists...

Amusing

A woman I do not know, found me from a highly neglected blog I started just for my art dolls.

http://trollopspeacocks.wordpress.com/

She bought one of my trollops back in the 90’s from a gallery in Illinois that I don’t have any memory of selling to (no big surprise there). The poor doll needed fixing and I said sure, I’ll give it a shot, plus I was curious about what it might look like after all this time and comparative changes in the way I play with clay now. Big change. Check out that jaw line!

What's in a name

Dustin \d(u)-stin, dus-tin\ is a man's name, is pronounced DUS-tin. It is of Old German and Old English origin, and the meaning of Dustin is "brave warrior"
Reference: http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Dustin

Sure enough...
www.warriordash.com I finished in the top 2% of all entrants (then again, there were people dressed up as bumble bees wearing tu-tu's - and I think I even saw a couple Elvi(plural for Elvis') so that's not saying a whole lot .... But anyway..it was 3.2 miles, 14 obstacles finished off with a swan dive into the mud, and washed down with a fire hose shower and a warrior sized beer mug - definitely something to put on "ya'lls" bucket list.
