A neighbor of ours, an older woman with a spritely black dog, stopped by our house last night. Knocked. When was the last time someone unexpectedly knocked on our door? Ever? She had brought with her a bright red bag. Inside of this bag, beneath layers of oh-so-fun paper, was a stuffed wolf pup. Every year that she loses a friend, she explained, she adds a new little one to her Christmas list. We have no tree, no flashy lights nor tasty tinsel, but it sure feels cozy and Christmassy over here. :)

Finally, I am home, he said with a shy.
who, the wolfe pup?
Several things:
1) Who is this woman? A neighbor?
2) Why no Christmas tree?
3) And I love this idea.
Cute pic of the boy :)
Ya, she is a neighbor, and we don't have a Christmas tree b/c we haven't had one for the past 15 years...but we'll likely get one next year, when Grayson will be old enough to appreciate it (at this point he'd likely just hurt himself in/on/around the tree and all its trimmings)
Abbzug, this is the most well written short story I have seen in a long time. Heartwarming and perfect. And I love the picture! Did the neighbor know Grayson's middle name when she chose the gift?
Thanks, P-Lou!!!
And no, she didn't know his middle name. So cool!
Yes i think we are all leery of unexpected knocks on our door. We have become callous from Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, neighbors wanting to borrow a bottle of tequila, a ladder, sugar, $5, wrenches, propane, flour, etc. and every salesperson under the sun: Siding,(Tinmen), Roofers, Window,Magazine, Newspaper solicitors, and encyclopedia salesmen. It is refreshing to see a real person knock with a real story and a present! and the fact that she has a "sprightly" dog !!!!! (Adj.1.sprightly - full of spirit and vitality; "a spirited - displaying animation, vigor, or liveliness...you gotta love it!
