The results are in....

** Dallas White Rock Marathon **

* Finished in 272nd place out of 5,773
* Finished ahead of 95.3 % of other finishers
* Finished ahead of 91% of other males
* Males (31 - 34 yrs old) I finished ahead of 92%
* Finished ahead of 99% of females
* Between miles 10 and 13 I passed 24 people
* Between miles 10 and 13 I got passed by 9 people
* Average per mile pace: 7:44
* Average Speed: 7.8 MPH
* My time was 1:41:25
* Average time was 2:23:06

As I stated previously my goal time was 1:39:59 but (after looking at my mile per mile results) I started off really slow because I couldn't separate from the pack. They anticipated around 17,000 total entrants that included half marathon, full marathon, wheelchair, marathon relay, etc., so it was VERY packed and it was next to impossible to get any elbow room for about the first 3 miles ... after that my time dropped by about 1 minute per mile but it was too hard for me to make up the couple minutes I lost in the first few miles. On top of that there were "record head winds", (and they weren't joking!... nothing like running uphill AND into the wind) and it was unusually hot (66 degrees at the start) compared to around 40 degrees at the start last year (colder is always better for a long run) - so there was certainly some over-heating issues. On a possibly related note one gal (healthy, experienced runner / 29 year old female) collapsed and died at mile 21 of her marathon run, which is really sad. They did say given the temperature they were adding some additional medical teams but I think in the end they said the response time to this particular runner was especially slow.

I had a small piece of paper in my pocket where I wrote some of my goals like my goal time, goal pace and some things to remember like: "Don't stop running" and "you can rest at the finish" and lastly "Bite off more than you can chew - and then fucking chew it" and I had to pull out this piece of paper at about mile 7 when I just really wanted to walk and rest for a mile. I do think on a couple of occasions it would have been medically smarter had I taken a rest, walked for a while, etc., because I was on the verge of puking after the run, and couldn't walk straight, very dizzy, etc., It was pretty touch-and-go at the finish - but in the end, I left it all out there, I didn't stop running despite that constant and persistent mental-argument that I was having with myself during the course of the run.

Ask your dealer.

Sign of changing times? The new ad for Ambien CR encourages the viewer to "ask your provider". Are they just upfront with the idea that not everyone goes to the doctor for prescription medication? (I know that a lot of people see PA's etc. with HMO's, but I think this shift is more about the recession perhaps, taking it to the street.) I also like the disclaimers they rattle off at the end of these boomer-targeted ads. This one lists additional cautions about taking sleep medication. If you listen carefully, you'll hear them say at the end, "...and Polvo, this medication could result in sleep walking or marathon races through the neighborhood."

Puppy cam.

JUST in case you were pining for a new way to waste time, I recommend the live puppy cam, if you haven't checked it out already. Sometimes they play, sometimes they sleep, and sometimes the cam is turned off. They are so cute it is almost impossible to get anything done :). At the bottom of the screen you'll see how many other thousands of people are wasting time just like you. It's a brotherhood, a kinship, of the puppy watchers. Here's the link (you'll need to copy and paste) http://cdn1.ustream.tv/swf/4/viewer.49.swf?cid=317016

Is it just me....

Si Se Peude!

I voted this morning. It was a hard choice but I decided to vote for the candidate that's rumored to be an un-american socialist, marxist, far left winger, who pals around with terrorists, and who wants to spread the weath around. I've also heard that a certain plumber-pundit (or would it be pundit-plumber?) predicts that if this person is elected it will result in death to isreal. Chances are we'll be a lot less safe if this person is elected as well.

However, I'm not going to tell you who I voted for.

Waste of 3 hours, this was!

Happy Halloween

Down the tubes....

I recall watching a George Carlin stand up comedy bit one time where he was questioning various methaphors, or phrases. At one point he was talking about things 'going down the tubes' and how he'd never seen these "Tubes" before... but just now I found the picture here and now I guess I'm a little worried? It's unfortunate that these tubes appeared after his passing.... but doesn't it always seem to go that way?

Quote from his bit.......
"Down the tubes -- hear that one a lot. People say, "Ah, the country is going down the tubes."

What tubes? Have you seen any tubes? Where are these tubes? And where do they go? And how come there's more than one tube?

It would seem to me, one country, one tube. But is every state all of a sudden have to have its own tube now? One tube is all you need. But a tube that big? Somebody would have seen it by now. "Hey Joey! Get a load of these *****' tubes!"

Time keeps on slippen slippen....

Not much time left between now and my first Marathon. I wonder if it's a bad sign that after running 5 miles last night I'm having trouble walking this morning? Guess I'll know more when I run 20 miles on Sunday...hahaha (Shoot me!) Anyway it's sorta fun (torture actually) for me to do comparrisons.... so a marathon is 26.2 miles right ... so if you drove from Garden of the Gods to the Broadmore Hotel, and "then" up to the airforce academy that's 26.8 miles.... From Abbzugs house to Loveland, and then "back" to Abbzugs house is 26 miles... Abbzugs house to 1-25 and 66th avenue exit in Longmont is 28 miles... from the "Village" in Gulfport to Tampa airport is only 23.8 Miles so you'd need to add a few miles somewhere...

Interesting thoughts....

Blogfucious says....
1. One's political party really says nothing about one's politics.
a. "Conservative" v. "Liberal" certainly after the past 8 years "conservative" can't possibly mean smaller government and less spending right? Which party is for smaller government again? which is for less taxes? seing as though this bailout is tax payer money no? I'm confused.

2. One's religious affiliations say nothing about one's actual morals.
a. Would think there are plenty of examples of religious figures gone bad.

3. One's 'stated position' on abortion says nothing about one's actual value placed on a human life.
a. Would think more innocent lives have died under pro-life Bush than under pro-choice Clinton when factoring in wars, executions, and intangibles like poverty, etc.,no?

4. A person I know said they're voting republican because he likes their morals more.
a. Then I recalled 'immoral' Clinton being prosecuted by Newt while Newt Gingrich himself was having an 'immoral' affair. Would think it's not wise in general to look towards the government for moral guidance regardless of "party" affiliation.

Hence, vote for the person and not the baseless, meritless, and essentially meaningless party label, or whatever that really means these days anyway? What is which and which is what again?

Then I hear that Obama is being chided for his 'socialist' views... I wonder what those people call what's going on now. I.e. government buying companies and banks. Just curious.

Even without stating my own positions on the aforementioned topics - some perceptions out there make me scratch my head.

Ribhard Went A Courtin'

Here's the birthday boy back in the day all spiffed up for a date in the traditional southern formal garb: a tuxedo shirt, bow tie, cummerbund, and cutoffs. Notice that before the advent of boxed wine, there was the brown paper bag.
