I give up. What are these little pins? They show up, now and then by a chair often occupied by a guy with large, white sneakers. It has been going on for six months or better. They don't seem to be born from the shoes or the chair and we vacuum so seldom, I doubt they are from the hoover.

I see a double head on one end - if it were a nail:
Duplex head nail are used for temporary construction such as form work or scaffolding. The double head on this nail makes it easy to pull out when forms or scaffolding are torn down.
But, since it looks more like a pin and there has been a change in the climate there lately, I am voting for the Abbzug research direction.
